more
Tate Britain is second only to the National Gallery when it comes to British art. The historical collection includes work by Hogarth, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Constable (who gets three rooms to himself) and Turner (whose works are displayed in the grand Clore Gallery). Many contemporary works were shifted to Tate Modern when it opened in 2000, but Stanley Spencer, Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Francis Bacon are well represented here, and the Art Now installations showcase up-and-coming British artists. The gallery also hosts the controversy-courting Turner Prize exhibition (Oct-Jan).

more
This powerhouse of modern art is awe-inspiring even before you enter, thanks to its industrial architecture. Tate Modern was built as Bankside Power Station and designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, also architect of Battersea Power Station. Shut down in 1981, it opened as an art museum in 2000 and has enjoyed spectacular popularity ever since. Inside, the original cavernous turbine hall is used to jaw-dropping effect as the home of large-scale, temporary installations. The permanent collection draws from the Tate organisation's collections of modern art (international works from 1900 and on) and features heavy-hitters such as Matisse, Rothko, Bacon, Twombly and Beuys. In 2006, the galleries were completely re hung, with the artworks grouped according to movement (surrealism, minimalism, post-war abstraction) rather than theme. If you don't know where to start, take one of the guided tours.

more
London Metal Exchange Established for over 130 years and located in the heart of The City of London, the London Metal Exchange is the world's premier non-ferrous metals market. It offers futures and options contracts for aluminium, copper, nickel, tin, zinc, lead, aluminium alloy and a regional North American aluminium alloy contract. In 2005 the Exchange launched the world's first futures contracts for plastics; for polypropylene and linear low density polyethylene, with the introduction of regional plastics contracts in 2007. The Exchange provides a transparent forum for all trading activity and as a result helps to 'discover' what the price of material will be months and years ahead. This helps the physical industry to plan forward in a world subject to often severe and rapid price movements. Such is the liquidity at the Exchange that the prices 'discovered' at the LME are recognised and relied upon by industry throughout the World. The Exchange has a public viewing gallery which overlooks the open-outcry trading floor. This is open to the general public, Monday to Friday, by advance booking.

more
Press Complaints Commission The PCC is an independent self-regulatory body which deals with complaints about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines (and their websites). We keep industry standards high by training journalists and editors, and work pro-actively behind the scenes to prevent harassment and media intrusion. We can also provide pre-publication advice to journalists and the public. Members of PCC staff often undertake speaking engagements, including industry events, legal seminars and lectures, journalist training sessions and debates such as those organised by the Westminster Media Forum. Groups receive a briefing on the workings of the Press Complaints Commission and learn about the newspaper industry's Code of Practice, which it administers. They will gain an insight into past decisions made by the Commission and will examine the complexities associated with the need to balance the competing rights of privacy and freedom of expression.

more
Endorsed by international agreement in 1884 as the Prime Meridian of the world, the Greenwich Meridian Line, Longitude 0', is the centre of world time, defined by transit instrument and line across the Royal Observatory courtyard. The ROG attracts visitors from around the globe to stand astride the line that divides East and West. You can see the 17th century rooms occupied by the first Astronomer Royal, the observation room with its early Tompion clocks and displays on the development of improved navigation at sea that led to Britain's leadership in world exploration and trade for several centuries. Additionally, take a journey through time and space at London's only public planetarium. The planetarium's visually captivating shows provide a magnificent introduction to the mysteries and wonders of the universe, with information from NASA telescopes and the latest terrestrial technology revealing the secrets of pulsars and black holes. All shows are hosted by Royal Observatory astronomers who are available to answer questions after the main programme. Visitors can also try their hand at being an astronomer, guide a space mission or touch a meteorite which is over 4.5 billion years old at the Astronomy Galleries in the Astronomy Centre.

more
The highlight of the guided walks is naturally the visit to the Olympics Park, where a special visitor centre and viewing platform gives an impressive view. Having left behind the industrial architecture of Newham, visitors get to see the modern industrial engineering producing the main Olympics stadium and other buildings. It is a vast and breathtaking project, where fleets of buses take workers around the site, and where they are working to make this the greenest Olympic Games ever held. Choose from 3 different half day tours or combine two of them to make a full day tour. All tours are with a professional Blue Badge tour guide. (We recommend an East London and Olympic Park tour combined with an Olympic Greenwich tour to see the full extent of construction and regeneration involved in the project).
