more
The Menin Gate was erected to commemorate those who lost their lives in the Salient before 16th August 1917. The site of the Gate was chosen for the memorial as it was the starting point for the men beginning their journey along the infamous Menin Road to the battlefields. The Menin Gate Memorial currently displays the names of 54,896 officers and men of the commonwealth forces, who have no known grave. On its completion, the memorial was discovered to be too small to display all the names that had amassed, so those who passed away after the 16th August 1917 are remembered at Tyne Cot Cemetery.
