Universities and Colleges

Edinburgh

Surrounded by rolling hills and historic ruins, the majestic capital of Scotland was one of the major centres of the enlightenment, led by the University of Edinburgh, earning it the nickname Athens of the North after the Acropolis-like skyline of Edinburgh Castle The Old Town and New Town districts of Edinburgh were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 and yet Edinburgh embraces the new; the quirkiness of The Scottish Parliament Building and National Museum of Scotland are as revolutionary as they are traditional. A City of Literature, writers such as James Boswell, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Sir Walter Scott all lived and worked in Edinburgh. J K Rowling, author of the Harry Potter novels, is a resident and the work of Leith native Irvine Welsh, whose novels are mostly set in the city and are often written in colloquial Scots. From leading the way in decentralization to the rejuvenation of the port of Leith, Edinburgh is a great example of a city in transition and makes an ideal city break for those studying art, literature, history or geography.
